The Chorus

The Chorus maintains a loose relationship with the narative of the show, they sometimes appear as the Bacchaic women, intent on vengeance and mad for the God, and other times as town folk.

The Bacchaic Maenads

These are women driven mad by Dionysus. The blue coloring is meant to represent not only the night but the Adriatic sea accented with green representing Dionysus' grape vines.

Dionysus the God

I used a prolific amount of fog and haze to give the right amount of atmosphere to the tragedy. It catches the backlight in a way remenicent of light shining through clouds in the eye of God.

Dionysus the Woman

Dionysus appears in the flesh to tempt Pentheus.

The Sheppards speach.

I used a traditional McCandless style to light the stage using plasticity, however i used contrasting saturate colors, amber for key, ocean blue for fill, and red for the back to make the look less congruent and more contrasting. This created an intresting tone throughout the play.

The Sun as the implied source.

I used the sun as the implied source for many of the scenes in the play, however I added saturation to maintain an otherworldly, heightened mood.

The Cyc

The Cycolrama was made of parachute silk to give a more diffuse texture to the entire look of the background. I used a combination of front and back light to great colors with a lot of depth, giving it an intense, brooding mood.

Red Back-light.

This experiment gave me exactly what I was looking for in terms of mood for the tragedy. I see why red is such an overused color.

Set and Costumes by Igor Roussonoff

The set was inspired by traditional Greek and Roman theater designs. Costumes greatly enhanced the visual ascetic of the show, they were my favorite design element.
